Learning in Depth
Equip your kid for a future where depth matters most.
One topic. Twelve weeks.
A learning adventure.
🗓️ Next LiD Quest: August 29 – November 21, 2025

Learning in Depth is a 12-week, mentor-guided learning journey for curious kids (and their parents).Explore one random topic and learn to turn boredom into curiosity, and curiosity into pulsing, personal meaning.

Education has been disrupted
In a world where AI can generate surface-level answers, your kid's future won’t depend on knowing more — but on knowing how to go deeper. They need tools to question, research, create, and care.
The tools to learn anything in depth
Learning in Depth gives your kid the tools to banish boredom and fall in love with any topic — yes, any topic.Students will be randomly assigned a topic like dust 🌫, mollusks 🐚, rice 🍚, or ports ⚓.

Q: Good heavens, those are boring! Why would you start with something random?
Well, because the foundation of Learning in Depth (LiD) is that everything in the world is interesting — if you dig deep enough.

Here's the learning adventure we'll guide you through.

You'll get a dull topic.
We'll help you dig up the wonder within that topic by giving you a series of (often zany) challenges.
We’ll teach you how to rule research. We'll introduce you to a range of sources, and you'll choose a research path.
You'll play with your discoveries — remixing ideas, getting creative, and learning how to fall in love with your topic.
Finally, you'll integrate what you've learned into a project that changes others, and might just change the world.
Uh, hold up — did you just say ‘change the world’?
Yes, this is exactly what I’ve been looking for. How do I sign up?
👋 Hi! We’re Brandon, Alessandro, Shelley & Andy
We’re a bunch of teachers, homeschool parents, and education nerds. And yes, we’re on a not-so-secret mission to change the world by revolutionizing learning and education.

We’re very concerned that kids are working their way through their various curricula and emerging with the impression that the world is boring. We see the barrage of information (and misinformation) coming at our kids, and we’re asking ourselves, “How are they going to sort the garbage from the gold?”Curiosity and interest-led learning are great, but also… all over the place! How do we bring intention, structure, and proof of learning into the equation — without squashing our kids’ sense of wonder? We’re teaching bright minds — they know a lot, but there comes a point when a kid doesn’t need more content. They need to know how to care.
If these are the kinds of issues that concern you too, then stick around. But first, let's talk about AI... the elephant in the schoolroom.
In education’s quest for breadth — to “cover everything” — we're worried that our kids may be missing out on the skills (and delights) that come with deep learning. And that particular concern is more relevant than ever in the AI era.Let's just say, we are both exhilarated and terrified about AI in education. It could go really badly… our kids could use AI as a crutch, as a tool for cheating, or worse, they might question the necessity of learning anything at all, because “I can just ask AI to do it!”Or it could also go really well... IF we have the right set of tools to wrangle the robots. Timeless tools for thinking that are not only powerful for learning, but that have defined what it means to be human.

Learning in Depth
Learning in Depth was originally created by educational philosopher Kieran Egan, and we’ve lovingly adapted it for today’s curious kids (and their families) in a flexible, digital, mentor-supported format. You kids will be taught a set of timeless tools for thinking as they complete our LiD challenges. They'll use these tools to fall in love with their assigned topic (and — if we achieve our aim — any topic they encounter in the future). The LiD learning adventure offers a structured learning experience, with rigorous research guidance, without sacrificing the wonder and freedom that comes with learning about something you love.Want to know more? Keep reading, or sign up to join our LiD Waitlist and Open House on August 6th, 2025 at 2 pm ET.
How does it work?

Step 1: Join the Waitlist
Join our no-obligation waitlist to be the first to know when registration opens, get some great bonuses, and find out more about events like the LiD Open House at 2 pm ET on August 6th.

Step 2: Get your topic at the Opening Ceremony
On Friday, August 29th, 2025, topics will be drawn during the LiD Opening Ceremony.Below are the "perfectly dull topics" we'll be drawing your random topic from...Q: Ack, I can't stand this much randomness! Can't you give me some control?Yes! But just a little bit ;) On your signup form, you can ask us to select from two of the five columns e.g., Plants and Nature.

Step 3: Embark on the 12-week journey
With weekly prompts, research quests, and ongoing mentor guidance, your kid will move from curiosity to confident sharing through the LiD narrative arc. They'll share discoveries in a private community forum, where mentors offer feedback and cheer them on.
When they need help, mentors point them to our curated research vault — so there’s support on demand, without overwhelm. The journey ends with a final LiD Talk or creative Masterpiece that brings it all together.
Who’s it for?
Human beings! LiD is powered by “the lost tools of learning” — the original human toolkit.A few kinds of people might find it especially up their alley, but there may be some reasons why LiD might not be a good fit. Let's address those first.
LiD is probably not for your family if…
You’re looking for a tightly structured curriculum with fixed outcomes and assessments.
You can’t commit to the 12-week timeframe (September–November 2025). But get in touch if you’d like to join a future cohort.
You don’t have at least 3 hours a week to devote to exploring, researching, and creating.
Your learner currently resists any form of independent exploration (we offer plenty of support, but they do need to be somewhat willing).
LiD might be perfect for your child if…
You’re an eclectic homeschooler looking to add rich, meaningful content to your mix — that’s packed with curiosity, creativity, and cognitive depth.
You follow a classical education approach. LiD plays beautifully with classical methods, and you could even align your child’s topic with your current historical time period.
You’re an unschooler who cringes at rigid curriculum. LiD offers gentle structure without taking over. It follows your child’s natural curiosity — and gives you a flexible way to showcase their learning.
Your child is in traditional school, but wants to go beyond the textbook. LiD sharpens their thinking tools, builds original research and communication skills, and invites them to fall in love with learning again.
You've got a mix of educational approaches in your family. Some kids are homeschooling and others are in traditional school. You could ALL do LiD together!
LiD might be perfect for YOU if…
You’re a parent of a kid just mentioned in the above list — and you’d love to learn alongside them. Pick your own topic, or pair up with your child and be their co-researcher.
You’re a lifelong learner or autodidact who’s ready for a meaningful challenge. Apply the LiD process to a random topic — and then use those cognitive tools to add some gentle structure to any new topic that grabs you in future.
You’re an educator, tutor, or academic curious about a better way to teach, learn, and think. The LiD cognitive toolkit might just transform how you guide students or explore your own work.

LiD Davidson Cohort
This fall we’ll be holding a special cohort for families connected to the Davidson Institute for profoundly gifted children. Here, students will get extra help in…
enjoying challenge — when you struggle to learn something hard, that’s great!
learning beyond their special interests
making friends with like-minded kids
Q: Is this only for Davidson Institute Young Scholars?
It's not only for Young Scholars. Anyone in a family who has a child enrolled in the Davidson Institute Young Scholar program can join.Q: So can siblings join, even if they’re not part of Davidson?
Yup! Siblings and parents! This is a program where the whole family can learn together; each person has the freedom to make a topic their own. (And don’t miss our sibling discount.)Q: What ages can join?
The program is designed for kids aged 11 to 17 (and their parents). However, with some parental support, kids as young as 8 years old could benefit from LiD. If you're unsure, join the waitlist to get a better idea of whether the program would be a good fit. Or, get in touch.
Meet the Mentors
LiD is a guided journey led by mentors who’ve spent years thinking deeply about how real learning happens. When you join Learning in Depth, here’s who’s walking alongside you:

Shelley Smith
Homeschooling mom. Edtech enthusiast. Lifelong learner.
Shelley co-mentors LiD and has helped shape the 12-week learning adventure. She’s quick to whip up a walkthrough video or write a song about what she's learned! She test-drives LiD pokes and quests with her own two boys in sunny South Africa, and brings a rare mix of tech-savvy, educational insight, and unflagging enthusiasm. She knows what it’s like to want depth and delight in your homeschool — and she’s here to help you find both.

Andrew Wright
International school teacher. Psychology grad. Relentless encourager.
Andy co-mentors this LiD cohort and also runs an after-school LiD program at his school in Hong Kong. His background in psychology and love of tabletop role-playing games come together in a unique way: helping learners shape the narrative of their topic while gently pushing them to go deeper. He’s always ready with a dad joke and a well-placed question — and has a gift for noticing the quiet wins and celebrating growth that matters.

Brandon Hendrickson
Egan educator. Homeschooling dad. Founder of Science is WEIRD.
If your child has ever loved one of Brandon’s science classes, this is a peek behind the curtain at how he makes the magic happen.Brandon co-developed the original digital LiD experience and now brings a broader vision to its evolution — through his work on a forthcoming book about Egan-style homeschooling and his essays on The Lost Tools of Learning. He won’t be mentoring daily, but his fingerprints are on everything.

Dr. Alessandro Gelmi
Egan specialist. Philosopher. Mentor of Mentors.
Alessandro is one of the world’s leading experts in Kieran Egan’s approach to education — and Brandon’s go-to source of inspiration. He co-designed the original LiD program and now works closely with Andy and Shelley to keep evolving it. He’s the one who makes sure everything stays rooted in story, wonder, and mystery. He also leads thriving LiD cohorts in Italian schools, reaching hundreds of learners each term.

Most importantly, this all built on the idea of the recently-deceased philosopher Kieran Egan, who designed LiD to be the swiftest, strongest way to upend the educational world. He first proposed a different version of it in 2008 in an essay that’s still a blast to read.
What's included?
12-week mentor-guided program, divided into a four-stage learning journey.
A randomly assigned topic with guidance on how to find the wonder in whatever you receive.
Regular emails with pokes and quests. Depending on the stage of the program, these could be from 2 to 5 emails per week.
Our private course platform with text, audio, and video content to support each stage of the learning journey.
The research vault, which has guides and short courses to help your kids rule research using a variety of sources.
An online community forum, where learners will post their answers to pokes and quests, and ask questions of the mentors.
Regular feedback from the mentors — so your child gets personalized support and encouragement for the 12-week program.
While mentor support is only offered during the 12-week cohort, you’ll retain access to the course content and bonus resources for one year after enrollment.
The 4-Part LiD Learning Arc

Orientation | Weeks 1–3
The journey begins with wonder. Your child will explore their topic from many different angles, using daily, quick-fire prompts (we call them “pokes”) to uncover surprising, quirky, and mind-blowing aspects of their topic. In this phase, they'll use AI for quick answers, alongside sources like Wikipedia, YouTube, and non-fiction books. The goal here is to collect a brimming inventory of wonderful information about their topic.
Complication | Weeks 4–6
Now we go deeper. With mentor support, your child will choose one compelling aspect of their topic and shape it into a focused research question. They'll dive into real research, using the guidance we'll provide in the research vault. In this phase, the goal is to organize information into something meaningful. And again, we'll be guiding them with targeted prompts and pokes to make that happen.

Transformation | Weeks 7–9
By now, the topic is part of them. This is where they get to play with what they’ve learned — remixing facts (parody song, anyone?), experimenting with ideas (a startup based on your topic?), and trying out original ways to express their understanding (what if there was a whole religion dedicated to your topic?).Each week, they’ll choose from a selection of “quests” that invite them to create something unique. The emphasis here is on creativity, playfulness, and finding personal meaning in their research.
Integration | Weeks 10–12
With support from the mentors, your child will craft a masterpiece. If you mash up a TED Talk, a Science is Weird lesson, and a storytelling segment on The Moth, you'll have a good idea of what we're aiming for here. (And if students don't want to do a talk, we're open to other masterpiece structures.)The point is to reflect on how the topic has changed them and to share their perspective with others in an emotionally resonant way.

If this sounds good to you and you'd like to learn more, then we'd love to invite you to our Open House on August 6th at 2 pm ET.

The research vault
The research vault is a bank of mini-courses and guides designed to help you rule research and forever change the way you learn (we wish we could have had this in college).

Make AI work for you
Used naively, an AI like ChatGPT is shallow and error-strewn. Used wisely, it’s the greatest learning tool humans have ever built. You’ll understand how it works, how to minimize error, and how to make it fit with your mind… rather than the other way around.

Devour non-fiction
You’ll become a library power user. You’ll learn how to taste-test a book, x-ray it, speed-read it, and slow-read it.

Become a wiki-warrior
Wikipedia contains hidden depths: you’ll spelunk to the bottom, and turn its info dump into rich understanding.

Get the best out of "geek culture"
Podcasts, YouTube channels, documentaries, niche blogs, and Substacks — these are all examples of what we call geek culture. Since you’ve got to be super into a topic to create one of these, they’re a great source of surprising and current information about your topic. We’ll help you find the best ones.

Understand through works of art
You’ll see how paintings, sculptures, poems, and songs aren’t just frills — they can help you feel your topic.

Actually use academic journals
Scholars speak in journal articles that are deathly boring (to keep out the riffraff). You’ll practice hunting for them, understanding them, and actually finding them fascinating.

Connect with real researchers
We’ll teach you how to send emails to cutting-edge experts that actually get responses.

Big Q & A
Q: How can I learn more about Learning in Depth?
Join our Open House on August 6th, 2025 at 2 pm ET. If you're on the waitlist, we'll remind you about it, or sign up here.Q: Is this for parents, or kids?
Both! We've had several parent-kid pairs in past cohorts. You can choose to work on the same topic together, or each get your own topic.Q: What ages is this for?
LiD is for all ages. This particular cohort is designed for learners aged 11 to 18. But we see no reason why curious kids as young as 8 couldn't join; however, they'd likely need an adult or older sibling to support them.
If you're in doubt, reach out to us — you know your child, and we know LiD, so we can figure out if it would be a good fit.Q: Can a parent sign up on their own?
Yes! Parents are welcome as the primary (and only) participant. This may work well if you feel your kids are not yet ready for LiD, but you’d like to incorporate LiD principles in your home education. We're also planning to offer an adults-only cohort in the future — same content, but slightly shifted priorities for the autodidact crowd in mind. If that's you, then get in touch.Q: Can my teen do this independently?
We’ve designed the course to support independent learning, so yes. That said, parental assistance may be required at times. And many parents genuinely enjoy hearing about their teens’ LiD adventures and learning together.Q: Do parents and kids get different challenges?
No, everyone gets the same core pokes and quests, but you'll have the freedom to adapt what you submit for feedback. If that's just a few lines for younger students, that's great; parents and older students could choose to submit more (especially when a poke has taken their fancy!).Q: I'm a parent interested in what's going on under the hood, particularly from an Egan perspective. Will you offer any training on this?
We are delighted to say: Yes! Dr Alessandro Gelmi will be presenting a series of supplementary workshops for parents about the pedagogy of this approach and how they could apply it more broadly to their home education. This amazing value-add will be available to any parent signed up as the primary or additional learner in LiD.Q: Can my whole family share one login?
You can share the prompts within your household, but if multiple people want to participate in the community and submit work for feedback, you’ll want separate enrollments. (Each additional family member is currently just $90.)Q: When does the program start?
The Opening Ceremony (when topics are randomly assigned!) is on Friday, August 29th. The 12-week journey officially begins on Monday, September 1st.Q: When does the program end?
November 21st, 2025 — just before American Thanksgiving.Q: How much time does this take each week?
Plan for a minimum of 3–4 hours/week — more if your child wants to dive deeper. The rhythm shifts slightly with each phase of the journey. For example, Orientation is fast and playful, while Complication invites deeper research.Q: When does “class” meet?
This is an asynchronous cohort, so there’s no specific class time. However, we offer fortnightly online meetups for learners to ask questions and share their ah-ha moments with a mentor.Q: Will you run LiD again, or is this a one-time thing?
We plan to offer at least three LiD cohorts each year — so if you want to make Learning in Depth a year-long subject, you can! Stick with one topic or explore a new one each time. That said, each cohort has a fixed start date, and the Fall cohort is your next chance to join us (at a discount!). But if now isn’t the right time, please still join the waitlist. We’ll keep you in the LiD-loop and help you plan ahead.Q: Can I choose my topic?
Nope — topics are randomly assigned. But you can narrow the field by choosing two broad categories when you sign up (e.g., Animals, Plants, Nature, Culture, or Technology).Q: What if I hate my topic?
Look, we don't want to force you into spending time on something you truly hate, so we'll be open to discussion. But, be warned, we will lean towards convincing you to stick with your topic, because that’s part of the mission of LiD. You’ll learn to find the wonder, even in something that doesn’t seem exciting at first. And you’ll walk away knowing you can make anything interesting. Just ask Andy about coral!Q: Is there a money-back guarantee?
Yes. If you participate in good faith (doing at least ¾ of the required work for the first 4 weeks) and it doesn’t work for you, we’ll offer a full refund.Q: What does “works for me” actually mean?
We’d love the chance to make it work for you, but simply put, it’s not working if:
1) You can’t find any aspect of your topic that sparks wonder or interest, or
2) You feel we haven’t delivered on something we promised.Q: Can I pay monthly?
Yes. You can choose a payment plan of $109/month for 3 months for the first learner, plus $35/month per additional learner. The first payment will be made on enrollment; then on 1 October and 1 November 2025.Q: Is there a referral program?
Yes! When you refer a friend to Learning in Depth, you both get a book. Each of you can choose a title (up to $30 on Amazon) that you discover during your LiD journey.Just make sure your friend lists your name when they sign up. We’ll make a note of it, and then when you find The One, let the mentors know, and we’ll arrange to send it over to you.Q: Is this religious or secular?
The program is secular in content, but open-hearted in tone. We welcome families of all beliefs and backgrounds.Q: Will this count for school credit?
It’s not an accredited course, but if you homeschool, it could be used for credit in science, social studies, language arts, or other subjects, depending on your topic and how you frame the work. This is where selecting two categories of topics may work well.Q: Are there any extra costs?
We highly recommend a ChatGPT+ or Claude Pro subscription (~$23/month) so you can access the best AI models for research and idea generation. You may also want to buy a few books or supplies if you fall deeply in love with your topic. (And we hope you do.)Q: My child is already doing a lot. How will this fit in?
LiD is designed to be deep, but avoids “busy work.” There’s plenty of flexibility to work at times that suit you and catch up if necessary.
It adds structure to interest-led learning that is likely happening already, and you could integrate it with a subject like science, biology, social studies, language arts, or 16th-century Japanese history…Q: What if we’re unschoolers?
LiD can fit beautifully into an unschooling rhythm. We've found that LiD provides a gentle structure to support curiosity, not constrain it. You can flex the prompts and choose the quests to fit your lifestyle.Q: Is this suitable for families outside the US?
Yes — absolutely! LiD is open to families around the world. In fact, we think our international team is part of what makes this experience so rich. All you need is a good internet connection and a sense of curiosity.

Please can we talk about AI?
Let’s be real: AI in education raises a lot of questions, so that's why it's getting a whole section to itself! If you have questions we haven't addressed, please reach out.Q: Will the cohort be using AI in this course?
Yes, especially in the first two weeks. We use AI as a wonder-starter to help learners generate questions, angles, and surprising perspectives on their topic.Q: What if I’m skeptical about AI in education?
We are too, which is why we help kids to find the limits of AI. Your child will learn to check AI’s answers, spotting where it’s insightful and where it’s just plain wrong.Q: Is AI the main source of information in this course?
Not at all. AI is just one tool in a wide landscape of sources: nonfiction books, Wikipedia, geek culture, academic articles, art, documentaries, and more.Q: How do you make sure AI doesn’t just flatten curiosity?
Well, not to brag, but that's kinda where we shine. More accurately, it's where Egan's cognitive tools shine. We pair AI with Egan’s cognitive tools, which means learners don’t just use AI for answers. They stretch it, challenge it, and use it in imaginative ways.Q: What if I don’t want my child using AI at all?
No problem. You can skip the AI parts and still complete every poke or quest using other means (we'll help with that). If you have ethical or environmental concerns, reach out to Brandon. He’s happy to talk through the issues.

Give your kid the thinking tools for any future that greets them.
In a world drowning in information, it’s never been more important to teach our kids how to care. To build real understanding, not just collect facts. To tell the difference between what’s useful, what matters… and what’s just noise.Learning in Depth gives your child more than a topic to study. It gives them the tools to think deeply and stay curious for life. In the process, they'll connect with like-minded learners and realize that anything in the world can be interesting, and worth caring about. We'd love for your family to join us on this learning adventure.
Woohoo! Let's get you signed up
